ANNIKA WHITE

Moments Before Checkout: Photo Book

Statement

“Moments Before Checkout” chronicles our road trips to the lesser touched corners of North America. These trips began from a need to grasp a fleeting sense of the unknown. The distances started out short and only grew longer as we learned just how far we could make it on a single tank of gas. We would stay in the cheapest motels we could find, often decorated with familiar elements. Faded fragments of the past. With each new room came a new portrait: a new moment to preserve. And, as we do not rise early, we would often take these moments before checkout.

Artist Bio

As a creative duo and life partners, Annika White and Carl Knight have collectively made a body of photographic and film/video work together that spans nearly eight years. Possessing overlapping feelings in regards to gender fluidity and the detriment of capitalism, they combine their shared love of the fantastical to merge their distinct approaches and create beyond the bounds of their own singular perspectives. They’ve worked with just about every photographic format and tool, most often with a microscopic team consisting of just the two of them. Ultimately, their process is rooted in creation - no matter the means.
